The story behind the curved settee
CARPENTE has published a conversation with me about the curved walnut settee they commissioned me to make for their Surrey Manor project, and the thinking behind it.
Developed from our spindle back seating, the settee follows the sweep of the staircase, with two carved seats facing different views through the entrance hall.
We talk about traditional chair-making, working by hand, and what happens when the precision of a drawing meets the less predictable qualities of timber.

The collaboration is continuing through CARPENTE Editions, where the settee is being introduced as DIANA. Further commissions will each be developed for their setting and made here at Hensby.
