Founded by furniture maker Matthew Hensby, the Hensby workshop was set up with a belief that traditional craftsmanship can hold a lasting place within contemporary furniture making.

Matthew trained in traditional fine furniture making and has spent close to a decade developing his practice and running an independent workshop. At Hensby our furniture is handmade using time-honoured principles, with an emphasis on refinement and meticulous attention to detail. We believe that furniture sincerely made by hand carries a warmth and humanity that cannot be matched by machine-made objects.

We approach design from a perspective influenced equally by traditional craft and contemporary aesthetics. Each design is reconciled with the character of its material and the principles of traditional craftsmanship. In bespoke commissions, this often develops in close collaboration with the client, bringing the requirements of a brief together with the possibilities of the material and the way the piece will be made. Alongside commissioned work, we develop new pieces from the exploration of a particular material or craft process, carrying what we learn into contemporary forms.

We work closely with private clients, interior designers and architects to create bespoke and made-to-order furniture of an uncompromisingly high standard. Each piece is made attentively to the requirements of its setting. Our work has been sold internationally and exhibited through London galleries, with selected pieces currently on view at The New Craftmaker in Pimlico.
