First Milestones

Now that the machine room is up and running, and the first makers have moved into the workshop with me, the last week has felt like a bit of milestone. There is still plenty to do, but for the first time things are starting to function as intended.

Machines have never been the part of furniture making that I have been particularly drawn to. My interest has always leaned more towards hand tool work, but in a commercial workshop it is undeniable that machines play a vital role. Most fundamentally, they take rough timber and turn it into smooth, accurate components, and that preparation underpins everything that follows.

That is why I put a lot of thought into this room. I wanted a setup that would support my own work well, while also making sense for a wider group of makers working in wood. Some of the machines are modern and highly precise, while others are older, heavier and chosen for their solidity. Between them, the room is equipped to handle a broad range of work.

These are early steps, but it feels as though plans are now starting to come to fruition.
