Scorched Side Table

A side table made from burr elm, with a patchwork circular top and scorched pedestal base.

The top is formed from sections of burr elm, arranged to show the rich, irregular figure of the timber. Beneath it, the base is made from the same material, but treated very differently. The outside of the burr is scorched black, preserving the natural growth and texture of the tree, while the top reveals the timber within.

The piece sets two readings of the same material against one another: the polished interior figure of the burr in the top, and the dark, rugged exterior of the tree in the base. The result is a compact side table with a strong material contrast, balancing refinement and rawness within a single piece of timber.
