Explorations in Birch Bark: Part 2

In the first part of this series, I introduced birch bark and some of the qualities of the material. I’d now like to share the first furniture to emerge from these experiments: a pair of side tables exploring how the bark’s natural character can sit within precise forms.

For these initial pieces, I laminated the bark onto a supporting substrate, presenting its warm, leathery, inward-facing surface. The simple geometry gives prominence to the bark’s colour, texture and markings, bringing the material into a contemporary context.

During the residency programme, I hope to pursue other possibilities that explore the bark’s unique properties and it’s use in new forms.

One of these tables is now available to purchase through the website. I would also be very happy to discuss future work incorporating this material.
